We’re so thrilled that you’re here! Our story began with a diagnosis of autism in 2007, and from that day on we have been blessed with an abundance of empathy to answer the call to serve those in our community who are also dealing with hardships.
Our son Thomas, now 19 and nonverbal, goes to a special needs school here in Fort Worth, Texas, where he thrives in a loving and supportive environment. Thomas has come a long way, having overcome severe meltdowns, self-injury, and many sleepless nights because of prolific autism.
The reality of raising a child or adult with a severe disability is extremely challenging, especially if you are a single parent/caregiver. The devastating shortage of services for people with profound autism in Fort Worth is indicative of what is happening nationwide.
T4Autism is a nonprofit in Fort Worth, Texas that started because of Thomas and the thousands of families we have met along the way. Families and communities that serve the intellectual and developmental disabilities will forever need a lifetime of intentional care that includes safe environments, fellowship, resources, and educational support.
Providing food vouchers for families is essential since most children and adults with severe special needs have a special diet and cannot find what they need at the local food banks.
In addition to food, T4Autism assists families in obtaining guardianship and the legal fees associated with court costs.
We are committed to answering the call for more respite. Being a caregiver is HARD and caregivers need to be able to step away and recharge.
Lastly, we will sponsor single mothers and fathers, as many as we can, to a two-day retreat so they can rest, eat, and hear other caregivers’ testimonies so they can then return home with strength and a strategy to help lead their families.
T4Autism looks forward to collaborating with other advocacy groups that focus on inclusive research and service for this special group in our communities. The National Library of Medicine completed a qualitative study about the experiences and challenges of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder.
